Bryson City itinerary scene

Weekend itinerary

Two nights in Bryson City: train, river, and falls

Choose a railroad excursion or a full Nantahala day for Saturday, then walk Deep Creek before the drive home.

By Cal Mercer — a Second Star Guide itinerary

Bryson City sits where railroad platforms, Smokies trailheads, mountain rivers, and a compact downtown meet.

Best length

2 nights

Arrive Friday for downtown, devote Saturday to the train or Nantahala, and save Sunday morning for Deep Creek.

Stay

5 Mi to Downtown Bryson City Cabin with Resort Perks

A cabin about five miles from downtown Bryson City with resort amenities; allow for the drive to the railroad depot and restaurants.

Main activity

Great Smoky Mountains Railroad or Nantahala Gorge

Book the railroad excursion or guided river trip first; each determines Saturday's departure, return, and dinner hour.

Weekend sequence

One long Saturday outing

Spend Friday downtown, reserve Saturday for one ticketed or guided outing, and visit Deep Creek on Sunday morning.

Mountain railroad excursion near Bryson City
Railroad excursions leave from downtown Bryson City; the ticketed departure and check-in time set Saturday's schedule.
Guided rafting on the Nantahala River near Bryson City
Guided rafting makes the Nantahala Gorge a separate full-day choice rather than an addition to a train excursion.
Forested trail beside Deep Creek near Bryson City
Deep Creek's waterfall trails fit Sunday morning, close to Bryson City and separate from Saturday's longer outing.

Friday

Check in, eat downtown, and walk past the depot.

Use Friday for hotel or cabin check-in, dinner, the railroad platform, and a few storefront blocks in Bryson City's small center.

Saturday

Follow the train ticket or spend the day on the Nantahala.

Choose a scenic train excursion, a guided raft, or a focused Fontana Lake day before dinner back in town.

After return

Afternoon

Change clothes, then walk downtown before dinner.

Everett and Main streets keep breweries, bakeries, restaurants, shops, and the railroad depot within a short loop.

7:00 PM

Dinner

Choose dinner after the day's return time.

The Bistro at the Everett Hotel serves dinner Wednesday through Saturday and gives hotel guests reservation priority. Non-guests have limited availability and may reserve only one week ahead.

Sunday

Walk to waterfalls before the road home.

Sunday leaves time for Juney Whank, Tom Branch, and Indian Creek falls or a shorter Deep Creek walk before checkout.

8:30 AM

Sunday morning

Start with coffee, then drive to Deep Creek.

Confirm current breakfast hours, then drive into Deep Creek for the waterfall trail. Vehicles parked longer than 15 minutes require a National Park Service parking tag.
